What is Keyboard Testing?
Keyboard testing is the process of verifying that each key on your keyboard registers correctly when pressed. This tool captures browser keyboard events and displays detailed information about each keypress. It is useful for diagnosing hardware issues like stuck or unresponsive keys, verifying that a new keyboard is functioning properly, or understanding how the browser interprets key events. Unlike physical keyboard testers, this web-based tool requires no installation and works on any device with a browser.
Key Information
Key is the character produced. Code is the physical key identifier (e.g., KeyA, Space). KeyCode is the legacy numeric code. Location indicates Standard (0), Left (1), Right (2), or Numpad (3). Modifiers show which modifier keys are held.
Common Use Cases
- New keyboard testing — verify all keys work correctly after purchasing a new keyboard
- Key diagnosis — identify stuck, double-pressing, or unresponsive keys that need repair
- Gaming setup — test key rollover and confirm modifier key combinations for gaming macros
- Development — inspect key codes and event properties for keyboard shortcut implementation
- Accessibility — verify that assistive input devices generate the expected key events
Features
Real-time display of key name, physical code, and legacy keyCode for every keypress. Modifier key tracking shows Shift, Ctrl, Alt, and Meta states. Key history log lets you review previously pressed keys. Location detection distinguishes between left and right variants of modifier keys and identifies numpad keys. Works with any keyboard layout and language input method.
Privacy
All key detection happens in your browser. No keystrokes are sent to any server.
