How to Use

Enter a numeric value, select the input unit (B, KB, MB, GB, TB, PB), and choose between binary (1024-based) or decimal (1000-based) standard. All conversions are displayed instantly. Click copy next to any result.

Binary vs Decimal

Binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB) use 1024 as the conversion factor, matching how computers address memory. Decimal units (KB, MB, GB) use 1000, matching how storage manufacturers label drives. A 500 GB drive (decimal) is approximately 465 GiB (binary). The IEC standard recommends KiB/MiB/GiB for binary and KB/MB/GB for decimal to avoid confusion.

Use Cases

  • Cloud storage pricing: AWS S3 and GCS charge per GB — convert total file sizes to TB or PB for cost estimation
  • Bandwidth calculation: convert monthly transfer from Mbps to GB/month to choose the right CDN or server plan
  • File size estimation: sum up image assets or log files to plan disk capacity for your application
  • Memory spec comparison: accurately compare RAM sizes (GiB vs GB) when evaluating hardware purchases

Common Real-World Sizes

  • One smartphone photo: approximately 3-5 MB (HEIF format: 1-2 MB)
  • One MP3 song (4 min): approximately 4-8 MB (128-256 kbps bitrate)
  • One hour of HD video: approximately 3-5 GB (1080p, H.264)
  • One hour of 4K video: approximately 20-30 GB (2160p, H.265)
  • A typical web page: approximately 2-5 MB (including images, JS, and CSS)

FAQ

Should I choose the binary or decimal standard?

Memory and the capacity your OS reports use binary (1024-based), while storage manufacturer labels and cloud pricing typically use decimal (1000-based). Switch between them to match your use case.

Are the values I enter sent to a server?

No. All conversions happen entirely in your browser, and your input values are never sent to, stored on, or logged by any server.

Which units does it support?

It supports B (bytes), KB, MB, GB, TB, and PB. Select your input unit and the results for every unit are shown simultaneously.

Why does a 500 GB drive show only about 465 GB on my computer?

Manufacturers label drives in decimal GB (1000-based), but operating systems calculate in binary (1024-based). 500 GB (decimal) equals roughly 465 GiB (binary).

Can I convert values with decimals?

Yes. Any non-negative number, including decimals, can be entered. Use the copy button next to each result to copy it to your clipboard.
